Preparing For Your First Escape Room

Well, you’ve done it.  The reservation for your first escape room is confirmed and paid for.  Now your mind is racing about the adventure ahead.  What’s it going to be like?  Did I pick the right room?  Should I stretch beforehand, so I don’t pull a hammy?

To help with your preparation, we offer a couple of suggestions for your first escape room event.

  1. Have fun.  Remember, these rooms are designed for your entertainment.  Will to Escape room designs focus on immersive experiences that make you feel part of the adventure.  This is supposed to be a fun experience, so don’t take it too seriously.  Yes, it would be good to successfully finish the escape room, but many people have difficulty with the first try.   Enjoy the experience with friends and family and just do your best.
  2. Listen to the game master.  The game master is there to ensure a fun and safe event.  They will provide you with the background on the challenge and its specific ‘rules of engagement.’  Pay attention to the information provided by the game master to ensure you have the best advantage.  Google can’t help you here.
  3. Don’t go it alone.  An escape room is a team event.  You’ll have a better chance of escaping the challenge within the time limit with the team’s help.  ‘Divide and Conquer’ is the best strategy.  You may even make some new friends as a bonus.
  4. Watch the clock, but don’t become slave to the clock.  Most escape rooms have a 60-minute time limit.  While this is important to consider, don’t get preoccupied with clock watching.  If you’re stuck on a clue, ask a teammate for help or move on and come back to it later.  Watch the clock, but don’t become slave to the clock.
  5. Don’t be afraid to ask for hints.  Some escape room challenges are easier than others, but they all present a challenge.  It wouldn’t be fun if it wasn’t a bit challenging!  You’ll need to think out-of-the-box to be successful.  With than said, don’t be afraid to use the game master as a resource.  Sometimes a vital clue is only an ask away.

My children want to visit an escape room. I like how you mention paying attention to the information provided by the game master to ensure you can escape. Thank you for the advice. I'll share this information with my children so they can escape the escape room.

My brother has been thinking about going to an escape room that he can have a lot of fun in while being challenges. He would really like to have it made by a professional in order to have more fun with the process. I liked what you said about how the rules of engagement will be defined by the game master in order to have a fun, and safe event.
