How Escape Rooms Can Help Foster Creativity

Creativity is a skill that benefits everyone.  It’s not reserved just for the Silicon Valley software entrepreneurs or SpaceX engineers.  We all can be creative; it just come easier for some.  In some ways, creativity is self-propagating.  The more you adopt creative habits, the easier it becomes.

Creativity flourishes in those environments where norms and assumptions are put aside so people can see beyond what is expected.  Creativity doesn’t flourish in rigid confines of behavioral restraint.  The more we open ourselves to new ideas and stimulus, the more creative we can become.  Some people are more adept to creative thinking, but it’s something we all can foster in ourselves and our teams.

Escape Rooms are a perfect activity to help cultivate your creative side.  As you might expect, escape rooms present puzzles and challenges that often require an alternative approach.  Most escape rooms aren’t straight-forward efforts.  Simple, linear games lack…well…creativity.

Whether it’s family time, a group night out, or corporate event, an escape room challenge can help get the creative juices flowing.  Here’s how…per Misty Belardo’s explanation of creative people in her Bitrebels.com article.

Creative people are curious. They ask questions all the time.
  • Most escape rooms are designed to get you thinking and looking beyond the obvious.  The more brainstorming and questioning your escape room team does…the more successful you’ll be.
Creative people like challenges. They do not run away from challenges.
  • Escape Rooms are inherently challenging.  Some are more difficult that others, but they’re all challenging, nevertheless.  Embracing the challenges will help you successfully complete the escape room.
Creative people are not afraid to experiment.
  • The twist-and-turns of an escape room are what make it fun and rewarding.  The solutions to most puzzles and challenges are not what you first may think.  The correct answer may take some experimentation.

While we can’t guarantee that playing escape rooms will turn you or your team into the next Elon Musk, it may help get you thinking more creativity and even help you have some fun along the way.
